The BBC micro:bit v1 is a pocket-sized codeable computer with motion detection, a built-in compass, LED display, and Bluetooth technology built in.

It measures 4cm by 5cm, is available in a range of colours, and designed to be fun and easy to use. It can be coded with something simple in seconds – like lighting up its LEDs or displaying a pattern – with no prior knowledge of computing.

It also connects to other devices, sensors, kits and objects, and is a companion to Arduino, Galileo, Kano, littleBits and Raspberry Pi, acting as a spring board to more complex learning.

Each element is completely programmable via easy-to-use software on a dedicated website (www.microbit.co.uk) that can be accessed from a PC, tablet or mobile.

To have portable power for your micro:bit get the MI: Power board that encloses a watch battery, and the matching MI:Power case to prevent short circuits.

Great but more could included

BBC Micro:Bit is great and works well. However, you have to pay extra for a battery holder/connector, USB-c cable, and alligator clips. Also worth remembering that this version doesn't have the built-in microphone and speaker as advertised elsewhere.

Hi David - thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately, the version with the microphone and speaker is version 2, which is not available until mid November. We've intentionally held back from advertising this until then, although once it is available we'll also update the information on this product to point people to the new version.

The micro:bit delivered and works as expected, the kids are happy to explore it with their ideas in robotics.

I purchased this micro:bit as a gift, for my son's friend (9 yo). The potential is endless.

Handy embedded system

I also came across these through GROK Learning. Flexible but easy for students to start with block-based programming. Impressed that compiled code can be downloaded from a web IDE and transferred from an iPad via Bluetooth!
